Since this election clearly impacts the well being of all Americans, Surgeon General Benjamin can issue warnings to be placed in voting booths across the country. Given that time is short and this is somewhat of a “unique” interpretation of the Surgeon General’s role, I have taken the liberty to list a few warnings that Dr. Benjamin might want to consider.

Unlike 1994, today’s GOP is on the road to perdition not revival. After five months, the Congressional Republicans have been out of step with the public on every major issue. Blocking Obama’s health plan may lead to a backlash that only accelerates the party’s descent, and come November, Democrats will “reward” them handsomely for their generosity.
Jim translates a small drop in the president’s approval into signs of a great Republican wave next November. Jim ignores a dangerous number for Republican candidates: the congressional Republicans’ disapproval rating, which ranges from 52 to 72 percent in recent polls. More ominous is the fact that the party is alienating its base; approval within the Republican Party has fallen to a slim plurality in the latest Pew Poll. Continue reading
The GOP’s “Pelosi-gate” argument appears to be that Speaker Pelosi is corrupt to the core for slandering the CIA for not being fully honest on the question of torture. Now, they say, she must either provide proof to support her claim or apologize. At the same time they say she is playing politics and aiding the enemy if she attempts to investigate the larger question of whether we engaged in torture (which, of course we didn’t—so long as you draw the line between “aggressive techniques” and torture just shy of decapitation).

This is the red menace that the right is fighting against in order to return us to the days of laissez faire capitalism that gave us the Great Depression and Hoovervilles. Continue reading
The Republicans’ denial is part of a pattern of pretending that problems that do not fit their neat little world view either do not exist (e.g., global warming) or can be easily solved (e.g., abstinence will prevent the spread of AIDS). This is, after all, the party that had three presidential candidates. Continue reading
