Choosing the Republic Over the Republican Party: A Challenge to Rep. Katko and Sen. Toomey

Choosing the Republic Over the Republican Party: A Challenge to Rep. Katko and Sen. Toomey While I am a lifelong Democrat, I consider myself fortunate to know two Republican members of Congress. I was a high school classmate of Senator Pat Toomey and shared a secretary with Congressman John Katko when we were young lawyers … Continue reading

Note to Republicans: On Race, Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Note to Republicans: On Race, Actions Speak Louder Than Words The scandal over Steve Scalise raises a very difficult challenge for Republicans.  On the one hand, the party now has a lock on the white vote throughout the South but they bristle at the suggestion that they endorse racism.  The strongest way to communicate the message that … Continue reading

Six Years Ago Today: House Republicans Sparked Largest Stock Market Drop in History

September 2008. The Bush financial meltdown was in high gear.  President Bush addressed the nation to warn that “our economy is in danger” unless a financial bailout package was approved. On September 29, 2008, House Republicans triggered the largest stock market collapse in history when they voted against their own President’s bailout plan. Why, with the nation … Continue reading

Responding to the Tea Party’s Secession By Other Means

Responding to the Tea Party’s Secession By Other Means October 13, 2013 DU Link In considering the root of the current divide that has led to the government shut down, I am reminded of a 1994 visit I made to a German refugee center where immigrants from the former Soviet bloc with some minimal German … Continue reading

Republicans Are Losing the Post Election

Republicans Are Losing The Post Election February 17, 2013 For a political party, there is nothing good about losing an election. At the same time, there is little utility in the second kick of a mule, so how a party responds to a loss can be as important as how it waged the election in … Continue reading

It is a history of America at its best, in … Continue reading

Surgeon General’s Warning: Voting GOP May Be Hazardous to Your Health

Since this election clearly impacts the well being of all Americans, Surgeon General Benjamin can issue warnings to be placed in voting booths across the country. Given that time is short and this is somewhat of a “unique” interpretation of the Surgeon General’s role, I have taken the liberty to list a few warnings that Dr. Benjamin might want to consider.

The GOP’s Road to Perdition

Unlike 1994, today’s GOP is on the road to perdition not revival. After five months, the Congressional Republicans have been out of step with the public on every major issue. Blocking Obama’s health plan may lead to a backlash that only accelerates the party’s descent, and come November, Democrats will “reward” them handsomely for their generosity.

The GOP’s Pony Syndrome

Jim translates a small drop in the president’s approval into signs of a great Republican wave next November. Jim ignores a dangerous number for Republican candidates: the congressional Republicans’ disapproval rating, which ranges from 52 to 72 percent in recent polls. More ominous is the fact that the party is alienating its base; approval within the Republican Party has fallen to a slim plurality in the latest Pew Poll. Continue reading

The “S” Word and a Bankrupt GOP

So socialism to the right means New Deal and Great Society programs such as (i) Social Security which reduces poverty among seniors by 75 percent, (ii) Medicare which has increased seniors’ access to health care and life expectancy; (iii) Medicaid which provides health care for half of the nation’s low-income children and 60 percent of nursing home residents; and (iv) Head Start which increases the likelihood a low-income child will pursue college and not crime. This is the red menace that the right is fighting against in order to return us to the days of laissez faire capitalism that gave us the Great Depression and Hoovervilles. Continue reading

RAY BAN REPUBLICANS AND THE POLITICS OF DENIAL

The Republicans’ denial is part of a pattern of pretending that problems that do not fit their neat little world view either do not exist (e.g., global warming) or can be easily solved (e.g., abstinence will prevent the spread of AIDS). This is, after all, the party that had three presidential candidates. Continue reading
