DC Voting Rights

John Oliver is Dead on About US Territories, But Why Leave Out DC?

In his latest Last Week Tonight rant, John Oliver scored a bulls-eye lampooning the United State’s antiquated and unequal policies for their territories.  While I applaud Oliver shining a spotlight on a not very sexy but important issue, I wish he had gone one step further to highlight that the District of Columbia is also denied voting rights in Congress and, unlike the territories, they pay federal taxes.

In fact, no state pays more to Uncle Sam on a per capita basis than the District of Columbia which pays $32,811.79.  In comparison, the next closest is Delaware at $23,809.40 and California and Texas only pay $7,690.66 and $8,175.12 per capita respectively.
