HARVARD STUDENTS FLUNK 1964 LOUISIANA VOTER LITERACY TEST
REPUBLICANS WANT TO BRING THEM BACK
The past is never dead. It’s not even past.
William Faulkner, Requiem for a Nun
Harvard students recently attempted to take the 1964 voter Louisiana voter literacy test (see bottom for test) and they all failed. Louisiana was just one of several states that use “Literacy Tests” to prevent black voters from registering prior to passage of the Voting Rights Act. Below are links to the tests for Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina.
Alabama Voter Application Form & Literacy Test (1965)
Mississippi Voter Application & Literacy Test (mid-1950s)
South Carolina Voter Application (date unknown)
Shockingly, Republicans once again think such tests are a good idea.
