I’ve been asked to do a list of winners and losers for the 2012 election — so here goes.
First the winners.
- BILL CLINTON
What a way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his 1992 election. Clinton was the campaign MVP as he helped reelect a President so he can implement Clinton own economic program. In doing so, he strengthen the Clinton brand immeasurably and laid a foundation for a Hillary 2016 campaign.
- BLACK AND HISPANIC VOTERS
I was in Florida for the election and will always remember watching voters wait in line late at night on a Saturday just to vote. They knew the score and they were determined not to be silenced by voter suppression.
- PRESIDENT OBAMA
Follows Clinton as only post FDR President to get reelected. Remarkable achievement considering state of the economy.
- ELIZABETH WARREN
A new liberal lion in the Senate from Massachusetts.
- GLORIA STEINEM & SANDRA FLUKE
Feminists increasingly were worried that they had been too successful and that the younger generation did not appreciate the electoral stakes, but backlash against Sandra Fluke and the ensuing War on Women changed all of that.
- BLOGGER NATE SILVER
Runs the table in state by state projections.
- REP PAUL RYAN
Selection as Romney’s VP elevates him immensely in battles with Obama and 2016 fight.
- GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE
Overcame lackluster convention speech with bipartisan response to Hurricane Sandy. Classless dissing by Romney team only made him look better.
With pot decriminalized in two state ballot initiatives, I’m putting my money into brownies.
- VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN
Often mocked for being gaffe prone, he concluded a successful term as VP and reelection with his only notable gaffe being his BFD comment on health care (and he was right).
Honorable mention – CHRIS MATTHEWS
Despite his stupid comment about Hurricane Sandy, Matthews was legion in calling out the GOP on Voter Suppression.
- MITT ROMNEY
Romney ran a cynical, deceitful campaign that would make Richard Nixon wince.
- GOV. RICK SCOTT
Scott’s voter suppression effort backfired and helped rally turnout.
- THE TEA PARTY
By knocking out Dick Lugar in Indiana and then forcing Romney to chase after them, they helped seal the deal for Obama.
- TODD ATKINS
Atkins single-handedly gave the Senate to the Democrats and made the Republicans the pro-rape party.
- DONALD TRUMP
In 2012 he proved he was the Billy Madison of American politics and we are dumber because of it.
- KARL ROVE
Raised lots of money for no results. It only gets worse for Rove, since Anonymous’ charge that it blocked a Rove attempt to fix the election could lead to him an orange jump suit.
- HOWARD BERMAN
Losing by 20 points to a fellow Democrat who makes jello seem interesting.
- SARAH PALIN
The 2012 cycle witnessed the incredible shrinking Palin as her relevance diminished each month to nearly irrelevant by election day.
- PAUL RYAN
While his nod as VP nominee gives him a boost among the base, his performance made people think more of Screech from “Saved by the Bell” than Ronald Reagan.
- REPUBLICAN RACISTS
All Republicans or even Obama haters are not racists. This is true, but as the unveiled racism that poured out in social media at the conclusion of the election and immediately thereafter demonstrated, they do have a race problem.
