Today only To Kill a Mockingbird is being shown in theaters nationwide as part of the film’s 50th anniversary. Its a rare opportunity to see a classic and important film. Its hard to believe but only a few years ago a school district in Florida banned a high school play based on the book as too controversial.
One reason the film has such power is its hero Atticus Finch (played by Gregory Peck in an Oscar Winning performance) who was named by AFI as the top hero of America’s first 100 years of film. I am always fond of the following scene, as Scout sees how respected her father is, something I experienced at an early age as well as the son of Atticus Finch-like lawyer in a poor neighborhood.
